What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that treats the body as a whole. It focuses on the relationship between structure and function, aiming to restore balance through gentle techniques that support the body’s natural ability to heal.
Brief history of osteopathy
Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by American physician Andrew Taylor Still (1828–1917). After losing several family members to poorly treated illnesses, Still began to question conventional medicine. With a visionary approach, he developed a new form of treatment based on the idea that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when its structures function properly.
Still established the principles of osteopathy by focusing on the relationship between structure and function, and on the importance of the musculoskeletal system for overall health. His approach was natural, non-invasive, and aimed to restore balance through manual techniques.
One of his most prominent students, John Martin Littlejohn, brought osteopathy to Europe in the early 20th century. In 1917, he founded the British School of Osteopathy in London, helping to spread and consolidate the discipline across the continent. Littlejohn deepened the physiological foundations and established the basis for general osteopathic treatment.
